The great majority of inflammationsin this region begin in the appendix. Appendicitis is a very common and exceedingly important abdom-inal disease. It and inflammations of the uterine appendages consti-tute a very large proportion of all abdominal infections. It occurs atall ages and in males more frequently than in females. It is the causeof nearly all cases of peritonitis in men; and of most cases in women,outside of those due to conditions of the sexual organs. It is aninfective disease and is perhaps associated with imperfect drainage ofthe contents of the appendicular canal into the caecuru. The colonbacillus seems to be the common pathogeni
