English: Broad Gate, Ludlow Part of Ludlow's medieval town walls and the only remaining gate. Originally there were four main gates and three postern gates. Construction of the town walls began in 1233. As in most fortified towns, the walls and gates served not only as a means of defence. They were a means of controlling the entry of all manner of undesirables and enabled market tolls to be collected easily. They also gave support to lean-to buildings. In more peaceful times they provided a ready source of stone for building.
Traffic still squeezes through the narrow opening.
To the right is The Wheatsheaf Inn, opened in 1738.
