Morceau de réception à l'Académie, 3 juillet 1660 ; collection de l'Académie royale de Peinture et de sculpture ; saisie révolutionnaire, 1793 ; envoyé au Louvre ; envoyé à Versailles au musée spécial de l'école française, 1798 ; mentionné dans la 2ème salle des Portraits (n°153), côté opposé aux fenêtres, aile du Midi, attiques, dans l’inventaire de 1850. Envoyé en restauration, 28 décembre 1963 ; exposé dans les salles du XVIIème siècle ( salle n°8 ), rez-de-chaussée, aile du Nord, 1er septembre 1966 ; envoyé en restauration dans les ateliers de M. Grandremy et de M.Paulet, juillet 1971 ; exposé dans les salles du XVIIème siècle ( salle n°8 ), rez-de-chaussée, aile du Nord, 8 décembre 1983 ; envoyé en restauration, 14 juin 1995 ; retour à Versailles et mentionné dans la salle n°66 ( Vestibule de l'escalier des Princes ), rez-de-chaussée, aile du Midi, 18 juillet 1997 ; exposé dans les salles du XVIIème siècle ( salle n°5 ), rez-de-chaussée, aile du Nord, 26 août 1997 ; exposé dans les salles du XVIIème siècle ( salle n°10 ), rez-de-chaussée, aile du Nord, 28 mars 2001.

  • The subject of this portrait was identified as Louis Le Vau in 1955 by Albert Laprade, who recognized the plan as that of the southwest corner of the old Louvre, that is the Bathing Apartment of the Queen Mother Anne d'Autriche, remodeled by Le Vau in the summer of 1661, and the building illustrated in the background as the pavilion north of the Louvre's Petite Galerie (Galerie d'Apollon), constructed after the fire of 1 February 1661 (see also Laprade 1960, chapter 3, plate 1). If the sitter is indeed Le Vau, then the artist is unknown.
  • A portrait reproduced by Devêche (see here or below) and identified as Le Vau appears to be the same man at a younger age.
  • Christophe Hardouin disputed Laprade's attribution in an unpublished thesis for the University of Paris and identified the painting as Pierre Rabon's presentation piece before the Academy on 3 July 1660, which portrayed Antoine de Ratabon (1617–1670), Surintendant des Bâtiments (see Thierry Bajou; also Hilary Ballon 1999, p. 201, note 8, who was unable to examine the thesis but cites Bajou). Bajou comments that the "building plan and the facade therefore correspond to projects and not to completed buildings. It is unfortunately, just as impossible to confirm this identification, by comparing the sitter's features with those in other painted, sculpted or engraved portraits."
