Назив Μαύρη Θάλασσα, еквивалентан називу ''Црно море'', не може се пратити раније од [[13. век]]а. Према [[Страбо|Страбу]], Црно море се у античко доба називало једноставно ''море'' (-{''pontos''}-). [[Стара Грчка|Грчко]]-[[Хронологија античког Рима|римска]] традиција море назива Εύξεινος Πόντος (-{''Euxeinos Pontos''}-), ''гостољубиво море''. Овај је назив заменио ранији [[Пиндар]]ов назив -{''Pontos Axeinos''}- (''негостољубиво море'') (звано тако због тешке навигације и негостољубивих дивљих племена на обалама. Промена назива дошла је с стварањем колонија [[Милет|Милећана]], чиме је море постало делом Грчке цивилизације.
