Источна Немачка је била много мања од Западне. После Другог светског рата живело је једва 19 милиона људи у совјетској окупационој зони. Становништво ДДР се константно смањивало за све време док је држава постојала; са 19 милиона у 1948. спала на око 16 милиона у 1990.
