Емил Диркем — разлика између измена

Потиче из старе породице француских Јевреја, у којој су три претходне генерације били рабини. Учио је хебрејски језик, Стари завет и Талмуд, истовремено похађајући редовну секуларну школу. Убрзо након традиционалног увођења у јеврејску веру, у својој тринаестој години, под утицајем своје учитељице католкиње, проживљава кратко мистично искуство које га усмерава ка [[католицизам|католицизму]]. Године 1879. у двадесет и првој години ступио је у у чувену школу "École Normale Supérieure". Диркем није волео образовање какво је пружала "École normale" и његов успех ту није био посебан. Ипак, тамо стечена искуства била су значајна за уобличавање његовог мишњења, још пре дипломског испита одлучио је да социологија буде његово посебно поље испитивања. Иако ју је у Франскуској још раније изложио Огист Конт, идеја о науци о друштву није била популарна међу француским интелектуалцима, и социолошка дисциплина није била установљена. Диркему је било суђено да буде њен утемељивач. Као професор био је члан многих комитета који су припремали нове наставне програме и методе, покушао је да начин предавања усмери ка стварности, а не као уопштавању.
