Настао је још у старој Грчкој у 2. веку и повезан је с развојем филозофије. Тематика приватног живота и интимних осећаја обрађује нови облик, који су антички теоретичари назвали ''приповешћу о особама'', а која је данас добила назив [[роман]].
Од '''грчких романа''' сачувани су углавном они који обрађују љубавну тематику: обично се описују измишљени ликови, и то заљубљени пар који се мора растати, а затим након многих пустоловина и мука поново налазе једно друго и настављају сретан живот. Најважнији од сачуваних античких грчких романа јесу [[Харитон]]ова (''Χαρίτων'', [[2. век]]) ''Историја о Хереји и Калироји'' (''Τὰ περὶ Χαιρέαν καὶ Καλλιρρόην'') те ''Ефеске приче'' (''Ἐφεσιακά'') [[Ксенофонт]]а из Ефеса (''Ξενοφῶν'', [[2. век]]).
