У тренутку избијања Мексичке револуције, за Виљу и људе попут њега који су дјеловали као разбојници, превирања су пружила шире видике, „промену титуле, а не занимања“ по једној оцјени. Виља се придружио оружаној побуни коју је 1910. подигао Франсиско Мадеро да би збацио актуелног предсједника Порфирија Дијаза по [[план из Сан Луис Потоси|Плану из Сан Луис Потосија]]. У Чивави, вођа противника Дијазовог реизбора, Абрахам Гонзалез, убиједио је Виљу да се придружи покрету. Виља је заузео велику хацијенду, затим је зароб воз војника Федералне армије и град [[Сан Андрес]]. Наставио је да је победио Савезну армије у Наици, Камаргу и Пилар де Кончосу, али је изгубио код Теколота. Виља се лично састао са Мадером у марту 1911, док је борба за збацивање Дијаза била у току.
