== Историја ==
Пловећи јужно од улаза у [[Strait of Magellan|Магеланов мореуз]], шпански морепловац [[Francisco de Hoces|Франциско де Хосес]] открио је овај пролаз 1525. године, чиме је постао први Европљанин који је прошао кроз њега.<ref name="Oyarzun">Oyarzun, Javier, ''Expediciones españolas al Estrecho de Magallanes y Tierra de Fuego'', 1976, Madrid: Ediciones Cultura Hispánica. {{page|year=|isbn=978-84-7232-130-4|pages=}}</ref> Из тог разлога, појављује се као Мар де Хоцес у већини шпанских и [[Latin America|шпанско америчких]] мапа и извора.
Пролаз је добио своје енглеско име од сер Франциса Дрејка током његове [[Francis Drake's Circumnavigation|пљачкашке експедиције]]. Након што је прошао кроз Магеланов мореуз са ''Мариголдом'', ''Елизабетом'' и његовим [[flagship|водећим]] бродом ''Златна кошута'', Дрејк је ушао у Тихи океан и био је одуван далеко на југ у олуји. Мариголд је изгубљен, а Елизабета је напустила флоту.
