Čandragupta Maurija
Čandragupta Maurija (sansk. चन्द्रगुप्त मौर्य), (IV i 3. vek p. n. e., Indija) je osnivač Maurijske dinastije i prvi vladar (vladao oko 321-297. p. n. e.), koji je uspeo da ujedini gotovo celu Indiju pod jedinstvenu centralizovanu vlast (vidi Maurja carstvo). Poreklom iz siromašne morjanske porodice prodat je u ropstvo, a kupio ga je jedan bramanski političar koji mu je pružio obrazovanje iz vojnih veština, ali i umetnosti.[1][2][3]

Čandragupta je okupio plaćeničku vojsku, obezbedio sebi podršku naroda, zbacio s vlasti dinastiju Nanda i osnovao sopstvenu dinastiju u današnjem Biharu. Posle smrti Aleksandra Velikog (323. p. n. e.), osvojio je Pendžab (oko 322. p. n. e.). Proširio je svoje carstvo na zapadu sve do granica Persije, na jugu, do najjužnijeg dela Indije, a na severu, do Himalaja i doline reke Kabul. Svoj sistem vlasti je zasnivao na sistemu vlasti persijske dinastije Ahemenida. Umro je od poslledica gladovanja koje je započeo u znak solidarnosti sa svojim narodom tokom perioda nestašica hrane.
