Opis
English: Single tube Armstrong regenerative receiver circuit. The regenerative receiver was invented in 1912 by Edwin Armstrong and widely used until the superhetrodyne became popular in the 1930s. This circuit was widely used until the 1970s in do-it-yourself radio kits to teach people about radio technology. The advantage of the regenerative circuit is that it uses feedback to increase the gain of the amplifying triode tube so that a single tube provides enough amplification for the entire receiver. Second, the feedback also increases the selectivity (Q_factor) of the tuned circuit, increasing the ability of the receiver to reject nearby interfering signals.

The "tickler coil" introduces a small amount of the output signal from the plate circuit of the tube into the grid tuned circuit by magnetic coupling, providing positive feedback. The amount of feedback is controlled by moving the tickler coil closer or further from the secondary. In AM reception, the feedback signal is not made large enough to cause the tube to break into oscillation, but only enough to increase the voltage gain greatly at the input frequency. The "grid leak" resistor and capacitor provide a DC bias for the tube grid. Since the tube must also function as a demodulator, rectifying the AC radio signal to extract the audio, the grid must be biased at "cutoff", a few volts negative with respect to the filament, so that it only conducts on the positive half-cycles of the radio wave. The "grid leak" generates this voltage from the tube itself. When the grid becomes positive on the positive swings of the input, electrons are attracted to it, causing a grid current. The grid leak capacitor stores this charge to bias the grid negative. The resistor partly discharges the capacitor during the negative half-cycles to control the size of the bias voltage.
