Хомополимери аминокиселина (као поли-лизин) могу да усвоје α-хеликалну структуру на ниским температурама, која се "топи", размотава, на вишој. Овај прелаз из хеликса у завојницу се раније сматрао аналогним денатурацији протеина. Статистичка механика овог прелаза се може моделовати коришћењем елегантне методе матрице прелаза, коју карактеришу два параметра: склоност ка увијању хеликса и склоност ка растезању исте.
