[[Руска револуција]] из [[1917]]. године, била је логична последица комбинације потпуног економског слома, антиратног расположења и неслагања са аутократским начином владавине. Власт су првобитно преузели либерали и умерени социјалисти, али је њихов неуспех у спровођењу сопствене политике довео до [[Октобарска револуција|Октобарске револуције]] када су власт преузели [[Комунистичка партија Совјетског Савеза|комунисти]] [[бољшевици]]. Између [[1922]]. и [[1991]], Русија је била део [[Савез Совјетских Социјалистичких Република|Совјетског Савеза]]. Напредак у стварању социјалистичког друштва током различитих периода историје Совјетског Савеза био је променљив, од мешовите привреде и разноликог друштва током двадесетих, преко строго управљане привреде и политичке репресије током [[Јосиф Стаљин|Стаљиновог]] доба па све до „доба стагнације“ током осамдесетих. У оваквој ситуацији се појављује [[Михаил Бакуњин]] као отац [[анархизам|анархизма]]. Из Русије одлази у западну Европу [[1842]], где постаје активиста социјалистичког покрета. После учешћа у [[Мајски устанак у Дрездену|Мајском устанку у Дрездену]] [[1849]], ухапшен је и послат у Сибир, али одатле успева да побегне и да се врати у Европу. У Европи почиње да сарађује са [[Карл Маркс|Карлом Марксом]], упркос значајним идеолошким и тактичким разликама.
Питање усмерења Русије је било актуелно још од програма ''приближавања западу'' Петра Великог. Једни су били присталице имитирања Европе, док су други окретали леђа Западу и тражили повратак традиционалној прошлости.
