Специфичан опис, студија или анализа таквих правила може се такође назвати граматиком. [[Референтни рад]] којим се описује граматика језика се назива „референтна граматика“ или једноставно „граматика“. Потпуно експлицитна граматика која детаљно описује [[граматикалност|граматичке]] конструкције језика назива се описна граматика. Тај облик [[Лингвистички опис|лингвистичког описа]] је у контрасту са [[Лингвистички рецепт|лингвистичким рецептом]], покушајем обесхрабљивања или сузбијања неких граматичких конструкција, уз промовисање других. На пример, [[preposition stranding|предложно размештање]] је широко заступљено у [[Германски језици|германским језицима]] и има дугу историју у енглеском језику.
