Као син краља [[Пипин Мали|Пипина Малог]] и [[Бертрада од Лаона|Бертраде од Лаона]], наследио је свог оца и владао заједно са својим братом [[Карломан I|Карломаном]], све до његове изненадне и необјашњене смрти [[771]]. Карло Велики је наставио политику свог оца према [[папа|папству]] и постао је његов заштитник, сломивши моћ [[Лангобарди|Лангобарда]] у Италији и водивши рат против [[Сарацени|Сарацена]], који су угрожавали његово царство из [[Шпанија|Шпаније]]. Током ове кампање Карло Велики је претрпео најтежи пораз у свом животу у [[битка код Ронсенвала|бици код Ронсенвала]] [[778]]. Такође је водио ратове и са народима са истока, уништивши [[Евроазијски Авари|аварску]] државу, а [[Саси|Саксонце]] је поразио и натерао их да пређу у [[хришћанство]], уврстивши их у своје царство и тако је утро пут за каснију [[Отонска династија|Отонску династију]].

Француска и Немачка монархија сматрају своја краљевства наследницима царства Карла Великог.
 
Карло Велики је умро 814. након тринеастогодишње владавине Царством. Умро је у престоници Царства - Ахену у данашњој Немачкој.
