Питагора се родио око [[569. п. н. е.]] као син Мнесарха, резача драгога камена, на острву [[Самос]]. Вероватно је да је по наређењу самскога тиранина [[Поликрат]]а путовао у [[Египат]], да боље упозна установе египатских свештеника (''Isocr. Bus. 28'').
