Медисон, син угледног земљопоседника из [[Вирџинија|Вирџиније]],{{sfn|Ketcham|1990|p=12}} је учествовао у [[Амерички рат за независност|рату за независност]] као члан [[Континентални конгрес|Континенталног конгреса]] од 1780. до 1783. године.
