[[Турци]] у ширем смислу обухватају све народе који говоре [[Туркменски језик|туркменским]] ([[Уралски језици|уралско]]-[[Алтајски језици|алтајским]]) језицима. Сматра се да потичу од номадских племена из централне Азије, [[Алтајске планине|Алтаја]] и [[Џунгарија|Џунгарије]]. Рана историја Турака, као и свих народа централне Азије, обавијена је легендама. Кинески извори помињу их (од 1400. пре н.е, а нарочито од 200. пре н.е) као ратоборна номадска племена -{''Hiung-nu''}- или -{''Hsiung-nu''}-. Име ''Турци'' јавља се први пут у 6. веку: код кинеских хроничара у облику -{''Tu-küe''}-, у изворима грчких писаца као ''Туркос'' ({{јез-грч|Τούρκοι}}), док је у 8. веку у турским изворима (''орхонски натписи'' у [[Монголија|Монголији]]) назив Турци синоним за групу племена [[Oguzi|Огузи]].<ref name="ВЕ1"/>
