Proslava '''Dana zahvalnosti''' uvedena je [[1789]]. godine na preporuku predsednika [[Džordž Vašington|Džordža Vašingtona]] i odobrenje Kongresa. Kasnije, [[1941]]. godine predsednik [[Teodor Ruzvelt|Ruzvelt]] potpisao je zakon kojim se i zvanično uspostavlja Dan zahvalnosti kao praznik koji se proslavlja četvrtog četvrtka u novembru.
 
Dan zahvalnosti vuče korene još od prvih engleskih doseljenika, a slavi zajednicu različitih kultura. Po dolasku u novi svet, nakon 66 dana teškog putovanja, engleski doseljenici su se složili da odmah uspostave jednakost među sobom i prihvatili zajedničko ime Pilgrims - hodočasnici.
 
Naseljenim u luci, kojoj su dali ime Plimut, u današnjoj državi [[Masačusets]], prvi zanos i sreću uskoro su im pomutile teškoće u pribavljanju hrane. Spasili su ih lokalni indijanci, koji su im obezbedili hranu i naučili ih kako da uzgajaju kukuruz i drugo povrće.
