Dečak u plavom (eng. The Blue Boy) je portret koji je naslikao engleski slikar Tomas Gejnsboro 1770. godine.[2][3][4] Portret je u prirodnoj veličini (177,8 × 112,1), rađen tehnikom ulje na platnu.[5][6][7] Nalazi se Hantington biblioteci, u San Marinu u Kaliforniji.[8]

Istorija uredi

Dečak u plavom je najpoznatije Gejnsborovo delo. Mada to nikada nije dokazano, smatra se da je na portretu Džonatan Batl (1752–1805), sin bogatog trgovca. Portret ga prikazuje u odeći s početka 17. veka, a ne iz 18. veka u kom je slika naslikana. Slika se smatra Gejnsborovim omažom Antonisu van Dajku,[9][10][11][12] a naročito je slična Van Dajkovom portretu Čarlsa II kao dečaka, i portretu dečaka obučenog u crveno.

Gejnsboro je već nacrtao nešto na platnu pre nego što je započeo Dečaka u plavom, koji je naslikao preko. Slika je otprilike u prirodnoj veličini, širine 1200mm i visine od 1800mm. Gejnsboro je naslikao portret kao odgovor na savete njegovog rivala, ser Džošue Rejnoldsa,[13] koji je tvrdio da plava boja, kao hladna, ne može da se koristi kao centralna na slici.[14]

Slika je bila u posedu Džonatana Batla do 1796. godine, kada je bankrotirao. Sliku je prvo kupio političar Džon Nesbit, a zatim, 1802. godine slikar portreta Džon Hopner.[15][16][17][18] Od 1809, slika je ušla u kolekciju grofa Grosvenora[19][20][21] i ostala je u posedu njegovih potomaka sve dok je drugi vojvoda od Vestminstera nije prodao trgovcu umetninama Džosefu Duvinu 1921. godine.[22]

Nakon što je bila na raznim izložbama u Britanskom institutu, Kraljevskoj akademiji umetnosti i drugde, slika je postala omiljena u štampanim reprodukcijama,

Slika je, 1919. godine, inspirisala nemačkog filmskog producenta Fridriha Vilhelma Murnaua, da napravi svoj debitantski film Dečak u plavom (Knabe in Blau). [23]

Portret je prodat američkom železničkom pioniru Henriju Edvardsu Huntingtonu što je izazvalo negodovanje javnosti u Britaniji. Prema Duvinovom računu,[24] prodat je za 728.800 dolara (182.200 funti), tada rekordnu cenu bilo koje slike. Prema pomenu u Njjuork tajmsu, od 11. novembra 1921, otkupna cena je bila 640.000 dolara, što bi u 2019. bilo 9,17 miliona dolara.[25]

Pre odlaska u Kaliforniju 1922. godine, Dečak u plavom je nakratko izložen u Nacionalnoj galeriji u Londonu[26][27] gde je videlo 90.000 ljudi. Direktor galerije Čarls Holmes napisao je oproštajne reči na poleđini slike: "Au Revoir, C.H."[28]

Upravo je ova slika pokrenula pop umetnika Roberta Raušenberga da se bavi slikarstvom. [29] Često je uparen sa slikom Tomasa Lorensa nazvanom Pinki koja stoji suprotno od nje u biblioteci Hantington.
