Protein kodiran ovim genom je proinflamatorni citokin proizveden aktiviranim T ćelijama.[4] Ovaj citokin reguliše aktivnosti NF-kapaB i mitogen aktiviranih protein kinaza. Ovaj citokin može da stimuliše izražavanje IL-6 i ciklooksigenaze-2 (PTGS2/COX-2), kao i da pojača produkciju nitrik oksida (NO). Visoki nivoi ovog citokina su asocirani sa nekoliko hroničnih inflamatornih oboljenja uključujući reumatoidni artritis, psorijazu i multiplu sklerozu.[2]
