Braća Marks

Braća Marks (engl. Brothers Marx): Artur - Harpo (1888—1964), Džulijus - Gručo (1890—1977), Leonard - Čiko (1887—1961), Milton - Gumo (1893—1977) i Herbert - Zepo (1901—1979) su bili sjeverno-američki komičari.[1][2][3]

U periodu od 1935. do 1940. godine svojim kalamburima i paradoksima dominirali su američkom filmskom komedijom.[4]

Imena braće, porodično poreklo i životno doba uredi

Braća Marks su rođena u Njujorku, sinovi jevrejskih imigranata iz Nemačke i Francuske. Njihova majka Mini Šonberg (profesionalno poznata kao Mini Palmer, kasnije menadžer braće) bila je iz Dornuma u Istočnoj Friziji, a njihov otac Samuel („Sam”; rođen kao Sajmon) Marks bio je rodom iz Mercvilera, malog alzaskog sela, i radio kao krojač.[5][6] Njegovo ime je promenjeno u Samuel Mark i dobio je nadimak „Frenči”.[7] Porodica je živela u okrugu Jorkvil na njujorškoj Gornjoj istočnoj strani, sa centrom u irskoj, nemačkoj i italijanskoj četvrti. Braća su najpoznatija po umetničkim imenima:

Još jedan brat, Manfred („Mani”), prvorođeni sin Sema i Mini, rođen je 1886. godine i umro u detinjstvu:[14][15][16]

Porodična saga govori o prvorođenom sinu Maniju, rođenom 1886. godine, ali je preživio samo tri meseca i umro od tuberkuloze. Čak su se i neki članovi porodice Marks pitali da li je on čisti mit, ali postojanje Manfreda se može proveriti: izvod iz knjige umrlih okruga Menhetn otkriva da je 17. jula 1886. godine, u starosti od sedam meseci, umro od enterokolitisa, čemu je doprinela „astenija”, tj. verovatno žrtva gripa. Sahranjen je na groblju Vašington u Bruklinu, pored svoje bake, Fani Sofi Šonberg (rođene Salomons), koja je umrla 10. aprila 1901.[14]

Braća Marks su takođe imala stariju 'sestru' - zapravo rođaku, rođenu u januaru 1885. - koju su usvojili Minie i Frenči. Zvala se Pauline, ili „Poli”.[17] Graučo je o njoj govorio na svom koncertu u Karnegi Holu 1972. godine.

Mini Marks je došla iz porodice izvođača. Majka joj je bila jodlerska harfistkinja, a otac ventrilokvista; oboje od koji su bili vašarski zabavljači. Oko 1880. porodica je emigrirala u Njujork, gde se Mini udala za Sama 1884. Tokom ranog 20. veka, Mini je pomogla svom mlađem bratu Abrahamu Elieseru Adolfu Šonbergu (umetničko ime Al Šin) da uđe u šoubiznis; on je postao veoma uspešan na vodvilju i Brodveju kao polovina muzičke komedije dvostrukog čina Galager i Šin, i to je braći omogućilo ulazak u muzičku komediju, vodvilj i Brodvej na Minin podstrek.[18] Mini je takođe delovala kao menadžer braće, koristeći ime Mini Palmer tako da agenti nisu odmah znali da je ona i njihova majka. Sva braća su potvrdila da je Mini Marks bila glava porodice i pokretačka snaga za pokretanje trupe, jedina osoba koja ih je mogla držati u redu; za nju su govorilo da je bila neumitan pregovarač sa upravom pozorišta.[19][20]

Gamo i Zepo su oboje postali uspešni biznismeni: Gamo je ostvario uspeh svojim agencijskim aktivnostima i kišnim mantilima[21] a Zepo je postao multimilioner kroz svoje inženjersko poslovanje.[22]
