5-CT deluje kao neselektivni pun agonist visokog afiniteta na 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D, 5-HT5A, i 5-HT7 receptore, kao i na 5-HT2, 5-HT3, 5-HT6 receptore sa nižim afinitetom.[1][2][3] On ima neznatan afinitet za 5-HT1E i 5-HT1F receptore.[4] 5-CT se najjače vezuje za 5-HT1A receptor i nekad se smatralo da je selektivan za njega.[5][6]
