Matilda Engleska

Matilda od Engleske (engl. Matilda of England) je bila vođa jedne frakcije u periodu Bezakonja, građanskog rata u Engleskoj. Bila je kćerka kralja Henrija I. Kao dete je poslata u Nemačku gde se udala za budućeg cara Svetog rimskog carstva Henrika V. Putovala je sa suprugom u Italiju 1116, krunisana je pod kontroverznim okolnostima u Bazilici Svetog Petra i delovala je kao carski regent Italije. Matilda i Henrik nisu imali dece, i kada je on preminuo, krunu je zahtevao Lotar, jedan od njegovih političkih neprijatelja.

U međuvremenu Matildin mlađi brat Vilijam Adelin, se udavio prilikom brodoloma Belog broda 1120, ostavivši Englesku suočenu sa potencijalnom krizom oko nasleđivanja. Posle smrti Henrika V, Matildu je otac pozvao u Normandiju i uredio da se uda za Žofruu od Anžuja kako bi formirao savez koji bi štitio južne granice njegovog kraljevstva. Henri I nije imao više zakonite dece i predložio je Matildu za svog naslednika, naredovši svojim dvoranima da se zakunu na verost njoj i njenoj deci, ali ova odluka nije bila popularna na anglo-normanskom dvoru. Henri je preminuo 1135, ali su Matilda i Žofruna naišli na otpor normanskih barona i nisu mogli da ispune svoje zahteve. Presto je umesto njih preuzeo Matildin rođak Stiven od Bloa, koga je podržavalo englesko sveštenstvo. Stiven je preduzeo korake da učvrsti svoju vlast, ali je naišao na pretnje od susednih sila i od protivnika u svom kraljevstvu.

Matilda je 1139. prešla u Englesku da silom povrati kraljevstvo. Podržavali su je njen polubrat Robert od Glostera i njen ujak, David I od Škotske, dok je Žofrua bio zauzet pokoravanjem Normandije. Matildina vojska je zarobila Stivena u bici kod Linkolna 1141, ali Matildin pokušaj da se kruniše u Vestminsterskoj opatiji je propao zbog oštrog protivljenja londonskog stanovništva. Zbog ovog povlačenja Matila nikada zvanično nije bila proglašena kraljicom Engleske i umesto toga je dobila ditule ledi od Engleske. Robert je zarobljen nakon bitka kod Vinčesterabitke kod Vinčestera 1141. i Matilda se složila da ra razmeni za Stivena. Matildu je te zime u oksfordskom zamku opkolile Stivenova vojska i ona je bila primorana da pobegne tokom noći preko reke Izis kako bi izbegla zarobljavanje. Rat se pretvorio u pat-poziciju, u kojem je Matilda kontrolisala veći deo jugozapadne Engleske, dok je Stiven kontrolisao jugoistočnu Englesku i Midlends. Veliki delovi ostatka države su bili pod kontrolom lokalnih barona.

Matilda se 1148. vratila u Normandiju, zajedno sa svojim suprugom, i ostavila svog najstarijeg sina da nastavi borbu u Engleskoj. On je na kraju 1154. nasledio presto kao Henri II Plantagenet. Nastanila se o svom zamku kod Riana i ostatak života je posvetila upravljanju Normandijom, delujući u Henrijevo ime po potrebi. Svom sinu je davala političke savete, naročito na početku njegove vladavine i pokušala je da posreduje u krizi zbog ubistva Tomasa Beketa. Intenzivno je sarađivala sa Crkvom, osnivala je cistercitske manastire i bila je čuvena po svojoj pobožnosti. Sahranjena je u oltaru opatije Bek nakon svoje smrti 1167.
