Stepen (ugao)
Lučni ili uglovni stepen (1°) je merna jedinica za veličinu ugla, koja se obično označava sa ° (simbol stepena). Pun ugao sadrži 360°. Jedan stepen sadrži 60 lučnih (ili uglovnih) minuta i 3600 lučnih (ili uglovnih) sekundi.[4][5]

Stepen nije SI jedinica, jer je SI ugaona mera radijan, ali se u SI brošuri pominje kao prihvaćena jedinica.[6] Pošto je potpuna rotacija jednaka 2π radijana, jedan stepen je ekvivalentan sa π/180 radijana.
Istorija
urediOriginalna motivacija za izbor stepena kao jedinice rotacija i uglova nije poznata. Jedna teorija navodi da je to povezano sa činjenicom da je 360 približni broj dana u godini.[8] Drevni astronomi su primetili da Sunce, dok sledi ekliptičnu stazu tokom godine, izgleda kao da napreduje na svom putu svaki dan za približno jedan stepen. Neki drevni kalendari, poput persijskog kalendara, koristili su 360 dana u godini. Upotreba kalendara sa 360 dana može biti povezana sa upotrebom seksagezimalnih brojeva.
Druga teorija je da su Vavilonci podelili krug koristeći ugao jednakostraničnog trougla kao osnovnu jedinicu, a potonji su podelili na 60 delova sledeći svoj seksagezimalni brojni sistem.[9][10] Najranija trigonometrija, koju su koristili vavilonski astronomi i njihovi grčki naslednici, zasnovala se na tetivama kruga. Tetiva dužine jednaka radijusu činila je prirodni osnovni kvantitet. Jedna šezdesetina toga, koristeći njihove standardne seksagezimalne podele, bila je stepen.
Postoje indikacije da su Aristarh sa Samosa i Hiparh bili među prvim grčkim naučnicima koji su sistematski koristili vavilonsko astronomsko znanje i tehnike.[11][12] Timoharis, Aristarh, Aristil, Arhimed i Hiparh su bili prvi Grci za koje je poznato da su krug delili u 360 stepeni od 60 lučnih minuta.[13] Eratosten je koristio jednostavniji seksagesimalni sistem koji je krug delio na 60 delova. Do podela kruga na 360 delova takođe je došlo u drevnoj Indiji, o čemu svjedoči Rigveda.[14]
Još jedna motivacija za izbor broja 360 možda je ta što je on lako deljiv: 360 ima 24 delitelja,[note 1] što ga čini jednim od samo 7 brojeva, takvih da ni jedan broj manji od njegove dvostruke veličine nema više delitelja (sekvenca A072938 u OEIS).[15][16] Dalje, on se može podeliti sa svakim brojem od 1 do 10, osim 7.[note 2] Ovo svojstvo ima mnogo korisnih aplikacija, kao što je podela sveta na 24 vremenske zone od kojih svaka nominalno pokriva 15° geografske dužine, da bi se uspostavila korelacija sa 24-časovnom konvencijom dana.
Konačno, moguće je da je došlo do učešća više od jednog od ovih faktora. Prema toj teoriji, broj je približno 365 zbog očiglednog kretanja Sunca oko nebeske sfere, što se zaokružuje na 360 radi nekih gorenavedenih matematičkih razloga.
