Я с удовольствием принял бы участие в дискуссии, но, к сожалению, понимаю не все слова и не знаком с правилом именования географических статей в сербскоязычном разделе. [К сожалению дискуссия идет к худшему - выдвинули в качестве аргумента какие-то источники, но я так и не понял какого они года, только один из них издан в 1983 г., а если остальные еще старше... Но у меня самого к сожалению нет доступа к сербскоязычной географической литературе, чтобы проверить изменили ли они имя острова в соответствии с официальным русским названием, ничего не поделаешь. Посмотрите - немецкая и португальская википедии называют остров согласно русскому названию, а сербская - согласно названию америкосов. Жаль, не правда? В любом случае спасибо за помощь. Самое обидное это частые ошибки в англоязычных статьях, которые не проверяя переносятся по другим языковым разделам. Недавно мыс Желания был самой восточной островной точкой Европы где-то в 10 языковых разделах (в русскоязычной тоже перевели). Bot supported articles on German municipalities

Hello, Korisnik:Slobot is currently creating lots of articles on German municipalities which are merely not more than stubs. Here he calls every municipality grad which I translate with town. But most of these articles are not about towns but about municipalities which consist usually of one or more villages. At some of these municipalities not even a village has this name because they are named after some landscape speciality. Hence the information in these articles is somewhat misleading. At some articles I tried to correct this (see for instance Ауенгрунд) but I'm not sure whether this is correct since I'm not a native speaker. And there are simply too much for me to correct all of them. Generally I see the problem with articles created by bots that they are on nobody's watchlist and potential errors will remain forever. Ein Bot (evtl. ein Interwiki-Bot) sollte dies miterledigen. Also, statt "Grad" an 2-3 Stellen "Opstina" einzusetzen. Bin derzeit in Wiki-Urlaub und kann es nicht selbst machen. Und doch, ich beobachte alle Artikel über deutsche Gemeinden. Für sr-Leser: Jedan bot, (mozda najbolje IW-Bot) bi to trebao srediti sa svojim redovnim poslom. It's not that simple since in Germany there is a differentiation between town and village/municipality which usually refers to some historical rights and is not dependent on the number of inhabitants . The only solution I see is that the bot should recognise the word Stadt (town/grad) in the introduction. Ja. Das ist ein Weg. Vorraussetzung ist das die deutschen Artikel immer so ein Eintrag im Einführungssatz haben. Der Weg über, in jedem Artikel, referenziertes Gemeindeverzeichnis und dortigen Schlüssel 63 für Städte ist auch möglich. Wer will kann sich dort austoben, so lange ich in Wiki-Urlaub bin. Pah, das mit der 63 im Gemeindeschlüssel als Kennzeichen für eine Stadt war jetzt doch auch neu für mich. Damit dürfte es für einen Bot doch ein Leichtes sein, zwischen Stadt und Gemeinde zu unterscheiden. In fast allen Artikel über irgendeine Gemeinde in Deutschland stehen in der ersten Zeile entsprechende Stichworte (z.B. "Stadt", "Kreisstadt", "Hansestadt", "Großstadt" or "Kleinstadt", Gemeinde, Samtgemeinde, Einheitsgemeinde …). Die sollte man sowohl menschlichen Bearbeitern nahebringen als auch BOTs einprogrammieren. Im übrigen könnte man über standardisierte Kategorisierung des administrativen Status nach Stadt/nicht Stadt, Ortsteil, Gemeindestruktur, Kreissitz usw. die Übertragungen in diverse andere Sprachen erleichtern.--de:Benutzer:Ulamm217.239.22.92 (разговор) 22:15, 15. децембар 2010. As far as I am concerned, apologies accepted. I do hope the future steward will keep his neutral attitude and I would like to ask him to watch closely the user Fry1989, who started all this ugly fuss about the maps of Serbia. Hello Wikimedians, my name is Sam and I am working for the Wikimedia Foundation during the 2010 Fundraiser. My job is to be the liaison between the Serbian (Српски/Srpski) community and the Foundation. This year's fundraiser is intended to be a collaborative and global effort, we recognize that banner messages that perform well in the United States don't necessarily translate well, or appeal to international audiences.

I'm contacting you as I am currently looking for translators who are willing to contribute to this project, helping to translate and localize messages into Српски/Srpski and suggesting messages that would appeal to Српски/Srpski readers on the Fundraising Meta Page. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together.

Fundraiser 2010! Help Us Beat JIMMY!

The Fundraising Committee is issuing all interested community members a challenge: we want you to beat Jimmy. The appeal from Jimmy Wales and the corresponding banner have been tested head-to-head with other successful banners, and the results are clear: it's our best performing message... by a lot. This year we have a lofty fundraising goal; we need all of our banners to bring in donations like the Jimmy Appeal, but no one wants to keep the Jimmy banner up for two months. We want to run donor quotes, and other wonderful ideas, but we have to have banners that work as well as or better than the Jimmy appeal.

We've just released the highlights from a donor focus group, and the results of our donor survey. With one month to the launch of the fundraiser, the messages we test must be driven by data from our tests and surveys - we can no longer rely on instinct alone.

We've redesigned our fundraising meta pages with the Jimmy challenge; check out the survey results and propose/discuss banners that reflect these findings. Browsing the pages in Latin script

Hi. Transliterators are used on several wikipedias and on Serbian Wikipedia, but I realized that in order to see consecutive pages in Latin script we need to log out and browse the Latin pages as an IP. Logo

I made improved logo for Macedonian Wiki which includes some rare characters (special д and п) in tagline "Слободна енциклопедиjа", and I wonder if this tagline shall be the same in Serbian language?

Thanks for that very much! We do need a new logo, with Serbian italic. I think that the one you've made is very good. Letter spacing is a bit larger, and J doesn't have descender (doesn't go under the text line), but other than that it seems more-less the same as the original logo.

On another note, not only (д and п) are differ in Serbian/Macedonian Cyrillic, б (or b in Latin) is slightly different as well (look at the image below)

I don't know if it would be a lot of work to change that as well, but none the less, п and д were the main problem, because they differ the most. I'll drop a note on Serbian on village pump, and in a day or two I'll update the logo. Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

• Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
• New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
• The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
• Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
• Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
• Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
• The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
• More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
• Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
• Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
• Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Update on IPv6

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

• At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)

• In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.

• We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. Localizing images into Serbian

Hi. I localized an image which I created into Serbian (Latin) last night, and uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons - it's now on here attached to your article Blast povrede/Бласт повреде. Since your Wiki has two versions, Latin Serbian and Cyrillic Serbian, should I also produce the image in Cyrillic Serbian? I don't know how, but I'd like the article to show the Latin version of my image on the Latin version of your article, and the Cyrillic version of my image (when I make one) on the Cyrillic version of the article. Hi to you, too. Btw, I was the one that patrolled you edit. I think it's possible to create some kind of template, which would be able to switch images when the transliterator activates, but for that we'll have to wait for some technically experienced users. Actually, there's a little problem with the article and thus the localized image for blast injuries. For example, it stated "primarne blast povreda" which isn't correct. The singular is "primarna blast povreda" and plural is "primarne blast povrede". I fixed that and now it's the true plural. For the image, singulars are "primarna/sekundarna/tercijarna blast povreda". --Lakisan97 (разговор) 14:38, 6. јануар 2013. (CET)

Hi. Currently, latin/cyrillic conversion is built in MediaWiki software, and there is no possibility to swap pictures based on script used. But, this should not be problem, we use pictures in Serbian cyrillic, Serbian latin, English... Maybe, the best solution can be to produce numbered, not textually described image. Then, description can be given in File: tag, and its script will be changed together with the rest of the article text. --В. Бургић (реци...) 21:06, 6. јануар 2013. (CET)

Wikimedia sites to move to primary data center in Ashburn, Virginia. Read-only mode expected.

Wikidata phase 1 (language links) coming to this Wikipedia

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Where can I find more information and ask questions?

Editors on en:wp have created a great page with all the necessary information for editors and there is also an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

Kruno Radiljević

Hi, I am a user of it.wikipedia. I've created the page of it:Kruno Radiljević he was a football player who was in the Yugoslavia squad that won the silver medal on the Olympic games of 1956. Fortunately I have found his football career but I can't find any information about his life. Just I now that he was born on 1931 and I have found that now (probably) he is bosniac, but I don't where he is born, if now he is alive, etc etc. As I said he played for Yugoslavia, so do you know some football sources where I can found some info about him? JS for persistent script settings

I notice that after selecting "Latinica" at the top of the page, all links on the page still lead to Cyrillic pages. Have you considered fixing that with JS? Adding something like this:

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

• A new extension ("TemplateData") was added to all Wikipedia sites on May 20. It will allow a future version of VisualEditor to edit templates. [9]
• New sites: Greek Wikivoyage and Venetian Wiktionary joined the Wikimedia family last week; the total number of project wikis is now 794. [10] [11]
• The logo of 18 Wikipedias was changed to version 2.0 in a third group of updates. [12]

Future software changes

Speak up about the trademark registration of the Community logo.

Please join the consultation about the Community logo that represents Meta-Wiki: m:Community Logo/Request for consultation.

This community consultation was commenced on September 24. The following day, two individuals filed a legal opposition against the registration of the Community logo.

The question is whether the Wikimedia Foundation should seek a collective membership mark with respect to this logo or abandon its registration and protection of the trademark.

CYR/LAT solution in Serbian Wikipedia

Hello! I would like to learn in detail about principles and technology used in Serbian Wikipedia to create/store/update twin articles in CYR/LAT. I'm from Tatar Wikipedia, where we also write in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Our articles are available in either or both scripts (linked via manually added TwinLAT/TwinCYR templates) which is not very convenient.
The need to learn about such principles and technologies is relatively urgent for us, as the issue of ArticleCount has now caused a contentious vote about forced deletion/merging of such articles (closed yesterday), which wouldn't allow people who can use only one script, to contribute into Tatar Wikipedia articles originally created in another script.
History of the issue: Latin script was used for Tatar language in parallel with Arabic from the end of 19th century, gaining wide acceptance by early 1920s, both choked in USSR following Stalin's 1939 decision to enforce Cyrillic. Now predominantly Cyrillic Tatar Wikipedia started as TATLAT by Tatar diaspora outside of Russia, currently ~20% of Tatars live outside of Cyrillic use area. On Dec.24, 2012 Tatarstan parliament has formally approved use of Latin & Arabic scripts again (see TATWIKi CYR article, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty published article in TATCYR or Tatar-Inform.ru Tatarstan's official news-agency article in TATLAT). Currently, active user contributions are ~ 50/50 in Latin & Cyrillic. - Frhdkazan (talk) 06:04, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm not too familiar with the technical implementation of the language conversion system, but it shouldn't be too complicated. I think it's easy enough to make it for ttwiki. As for using the dual system, you just click on a version you want to see and the article gets transliterated from one script to the other. I see you have resolved ArticleCount issue by allowing use of sole script in the page (whichever's first) and using CYR->LAT & LAT->CYR converters. But what is your policy towards LAT only or CYR only user who wants to contribute into an article originally in another script? Did you implement automatic CYR/LAT synchronization of some sort, do you allow CYR/LAT articles to be different or do you mandate that contributions are only in the original article script? - Frhdkazan (разговор) 09:10, 25. октобар 2013. We have policy VP:SRPSKI. Its third paragraph discusses about changing the script. In a nutshell, articles can be written in either Cyrillic or Latin script. Those two, however, mustn't be mixed. If there is a particular reason to mix the scripts (writing down untranscribed names, for example) we avoid priblems with -{}-. Some users, as you already mentioned, may refuse or are unable to write in one script or another. Nevertheless, everyone should contribute in the original script. Exceptions are regulated by VP:SRPSKI. For example, if we have ten articles about songs of one particular artist and only one of them is in Cyrillic, it should be changed to Latin and vice-versa (so, one series of articles — one script). Next, if the size of the article is doubled (stub → more informations), contributor chooses the script. Finally, if the article isn't doubled but thoroughly cleaned and improved, script can be changed. P.S. Request for comment on Commons: Should Wikimedia support MP4 video?

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.

(For example, English Wikipedia has many banned users coming to Meta-Wiki to appeal their bans but Meta-Wiki's community has no authority on the English Wikipedia, therefore similar issues local to Serbian Wikipedia should be handled by Serbian Wikipedia community.) Universal Language Selector will be enabled by default again on this wiki by 21 February 2014

On January 21 2014 the MediaWiki extension Universal Language Selector (ULS) was disabled on this wiki. A new preference was added for logged-in users to turn on ULS. This was done to prevent slow loading of pages due to ULS webfonts, a behaviour that had been observed by the Wikimedia Technical Operations team on some wikis.

We are now ready to enable ULS again. The temporary preference to enable ULS will be removed. A new checkbox has been added to the Language Panel to enable/disable font delivery. This will be unchecked by default for this wiki, but can be selected at any time by the users to enable webfonts. This is an interim solution while we improve the feature of webfonts delivery.

Changes to the default site typography coming soon

This week, the typography on Wikimedia sites will be updated for all readers and editors who use the default "Vector" skin. This change will involve new serif fonts for some headings, small tweaks to body content fonts, text size, text color, and spacing between elements. The schedule is:

• April 1st: non-Wikipedia projects will see this change live
• April 3rd: Wikipedias will see this change live

This change is very similar to the "Typography Update" Beta Feature that has been available on Wikimedia projects since November 2013. After several rounds of testing and with feedback from the community, this Beta Feature will be disabled and successful aspects enabled in the default site appearance. Users who are logged in may still choose to use another skin, or alter their personal CSS, if they prefer a different appearance. Local common CSS styles will also apply as normal, for issues with local styles and scripts that impact all users.

The Wikimedia Foundation's Multimedia team is happy to announce that Media Viewer was just released on this site today.

Media Viewer displays images in larger size when you click on their thumbnails, to provide a better viewing experience. Users can now view images faster and more clearly, without having to jump to separate pages — and its user interface is more intuitive, offering easy access to full-resolution images and information, with links to the file repository for editing. The tool has been tested extensively across all Wikimedia wikis over the past six months as a Beta Feature and has been released to the largest Wikipedias, all language Wikisources, and the English Wikivoyage already.

If you do not like this feature, you can easily turn it off by clicking on "Disable Media Viewer" at the bottom of the screen, pulling up the information panel (or in your your preferences) whether you have an account or not. Learn more in this Media Viewer Help page.

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decisions

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

Change in renaming process

Single-user login (SUL) finalisation's goal is so that every Wikimedia editor has a single, recognized global account with one username across all projects. As you may know, after a long delay, it's now underway as an effort between bureaucrats, stewards, and Wikimedia Foundation engineers. This will also allow for development of cross-wiki tools like global notifications and watchlists. There is no set date for the completion of single-user login finalization at this time.

The process involves changing all rename processes into one global renaming process. The ability for local bureaucrats to rename users on this wiki will be turned off on Monday, 15 September 2014, as one of the first steps. Global renamers are in the process of being created to make sure projects and languages are represented by the time this occurs. I sent a note to every bureaucrat about this process three weeks ago with an invitation to participate and many have begun requesting to be a part of the group. Together with the stewards, the global renamers will be empowered to help editors work through the often difficult process of getting a global name.

In parting, visit Special:MergeAccount to unify your account if you have never done so. If your local pages about renaming still need to be updated, please do so and consider pointing people to m:SRUC for future rename requests, especially if this project does not have bureaucrats that hold global renamer permissions. Meta RfCs on two new global groups

Hello all,

There are currently requests for comment open on meta to create two new global groups. The first is a group for members of the OTRS permissions queue, which would grant them autopatrolled rights on all wikis except those who opt-out. That proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Creation of a global OTRS-permissions user group. The second is a group for Wikimedia Commons admins and OTRS agents to view deleted file pages through the 'viewdeletedfile' right on all wikis except those who opt-out. The second proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Global file deletion review.

We would like to hear what you think on both proposals. Both are in English; if you wanted to translate them into your native language that would also be appreciated.

It is possible for individual projects to opt-out, so that users in those groups do not have any additional rights on those projects. To do this please start a local discussion, and if there is consensus you can request to opt-out of either or both at m:Stewards' noticeboard.

Global AbuseFilter

Hello,

AbuseFilter is a MediaWiki extension used to detect likely abusive behavior patterns, like pattern vandalism and spam. In 2013, Global AbuseFilters were enabled on a limited set of wikis including Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki.org, Wikispecies and (in early 2014) all the "small wikis". Recently, global abuse filters were enabled on "medium sized wikis" as well. These filters are currently managed by stewards on Meta-Wiki and have shown to be very effective in preventing mass spam attacks across Wikimedia projects. However, there is currently no policy on how the global AbuseFilters will be managed although there are proposals. There is an ongoing request for comment on policy governing the use of the global AbuseFilters. In the meantime, specific wikis can opt out of using the global AbuseFilter. These wikis can simply add a request to this list on Meta-Wiki. More details can be found on this page at Meta-Wiki. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on m:Talk:Global AbuseFilter.
