Džejms I Stjuart
Džejms I ili Džejms VI (engl. James VI and I; Dvorac Edinburg, 19. jun 1566 — Česant, 27. mart 1625) je bio kralj Škotske, a kasnije i Engleske i Irske.[1] On je prvi vladar Engleske i Irske iz dinastije Stjuart (1603—1625), koja je zamenila izumrlu dinastiju Tjudor. Džejms I otvoreno je zastupao apsolutizam, tvrdeći da kralj treba da vlada bez ograničenja od strane parlamenta, crkve, zakona i običaja; da donosi zakone i sudi po svojoj volji. Pokušao je da vlada po tim načelima u zemlji gde je parlament imao dugu istoriju i veliki ugled, gde vladar nije mogao ubirati namete bez odobrenja parlamenta. Bio je oženjen danskom princezom Anom.

Pored antagonizma monarha i parlamenta, Engleska toga doba bila je razdirana sporovima oko crkvenih pitanja. Anglikanska crkva nije zadovoljavala ni katolike, ni pobornike reformacije, jer je zadržala staro učenje i uređenje crkve. Pristalice reformacije bile su jake u Škotskoj, koja je imala zajedničkog kralja sa Engleskom; nazivani su puritancima, nonkonformistima i prezviterijancima. Kralj je hteo da nametne potpunu jednoobraznost crkve i zbog toga je progonio puritance, od kojih su mnogi napustili zemlju i potražili utočište u tek osnovanim kolonijama u Severnoj Americi.
Detinjstvo
urediDžejms je bio jedino dete škotske kraljice Marije I i njenog drugog supruga, Henrija Stjuarta, vojvode od Olbenija, znanog kao lord Darnli. Bio je potomak Henrija VII kao praunuk njegove kćerke Margarete kroz dvoje njene djece; njegova majka bila je kćerka Margaretinog sina, a njegov otac je bio sin Margaretine kćerke.[2][3]
Rodio se 19. juna 1566. u dvorcu Edinburg i kao jedini Marijin sin automatski je postao zakoniti naslednik škotske krune i vojvoda od Rotseja. Kumovi su mu bili engleska kraljica Elizabeta I i francuski kralj Šarl IX. Kuma Elizabeta je kao poklon poslala veličanstvenu zlatnu krstionicu.[4]
Džejmsovi roditelji bili su katolici, te su se tokom Marijine vladavine suočili sa ustankom protestantskog plemstva. Tokom ustanka Džejmsov otac, lord Darnli, udružio se sa ustanicima i ubio Marijinog ličnog sekretara Dejvida Rizija pred Marijinim očima. Ovo je bio početak kraja izuzetno teškog braka Džejmsoevih roditelja.[5] Lord Darnli je ubijen 10. februara 1567. u Edinburgu, verovatno iz osvete zbog ubistva kraljičinog sekretara. Marija se u maju 1567. udala za Džejmsa Hepberna, grofa od Botvela, koji je bio glavni osumnjičeni za ubistvo njenog drugog supruga. Smrt zahtjevnog Henrija Mariji je trebalo da bude prilika za spas, ali ju je treći brak učinio krajnje nepopularnom, bez obzira na to što je i sam Botvel bio protestant.[2]
Džejms je od Henrija VII potekao kroz dve linije:
