Valter Skot
Valter Skot, često nepravilno kao Volter Skot,[1] (engl. Walter Scott; Edinburg, 15. avgust 1771 — Abotsford, 21. septembar 1832) bio je škotski pisac.

Sakupljao je narodnu poeziju i pisao romane o junacima škotskog nacionalnog predanja. Još kao dete, voleo je da sluša pesme i bajke njegovih predaka, i bio fasciniran njima.
Od njega se očekivalo da postane advokat, kao i njegov otac, i čak je je bio očev učenik neko vreme, ali je ljubav prema knjigama i istoriji prevladala. Iako su njegovi romani uglavnom bili o Škotskoj istoriji, njegov najpoznatiji roman Ajvanho govori o Engleskoj u vreme kralja Ričarda i Krstaških ratova.
Godine 1826. dobio je plemićku titulu, isključivo kao nagradu za književne zasluge.
Njegovi romani uključuju Rob Roj, Kventin Darvard, Talisman i druge. Ajvanho (1819) roman je koji evocira vrijeme tenzija između osvajača Normana i britanskih starosedilaca Saksonaca. Skot na jedan ubedljiv način priziva vreme viteških turnira, slave, krstaških ratova i zveketa mačeva.
Poreklo uredi
Valter Skot je rođen 15. avgusta 1771, u stanu na trećem spratu na Koledž Vajndu u Starom gradu, Edinburg, uskoj uličica koja vodi od Kaugekta do kapija Univerziteta u Edinburgu (Starog koledža).[2] On je bio deveto dete (šestoro je umrlo u detinjstvu) Valtera Skota (1729–1799), člana kadetske podružnice klana Skot i pisca pečata, i njegove supruge An Raderford, sestre Daniela Raderford i potomka klana Svinton i porodice Haliberton (poreklo zbog kojeg je Valterovoj porodici dato nasledno pravo sahrane u opatiji Drajber).[3] Valter je tako bio rođak graditelja nekretnina Džejmsa Bertona (um. 1837), rođenog kao „Haliberton”, i njegovog sina arhitekte Desimusa Bertona.[4] Valter je kasnije postao član Klarens kluba, čiji su članovi bili Bertonovi.[5][6]
Detinjstvo uredi
On je tokom detinjstva preživeo napad dečije paralize 1773. godine, što ga je učinilo hromim,[7] stanjem koje bi imalo značajan uticaj na njegov život i pisanje.[8] Da bi zalečio svoju hromost, bio je poslat 1773. godine da živi u ruralnim Škotskim granicama na farmi svog dede i babe po ocu u Sandinovsu, u blizini ruševine Smajlholmske kule, ranije porodične kuće.[9] Ovde ga je naučila da čita njegova tetka Dženi Skot, i od nje je naučio govorne obrasce i mnoge priče i legende koje su kasnije karakterisale veliki deo njegovog rada. U januaru 1775. vratio se u Edinburg, i tog leta je otišao sa svojom tetkom Dženi na banjsko lečenje u Batu u Somersetu, u južnoj Engleskoj, gde su živeli na 6 Saut Parejd.[10] U zimu 1776. vratio se u Sandinovs, sa još jednim pokušajem lečenja vodom u Prestonpansu tokom sledećeg leta.[9]
Godine 1778. Skot se vratio u Edinburg na privatno obrazovanje kako bi se pripremio za školu i pridružio porodici u njihovoj novoj kući, jednoj od prvih koja izgrađenih na Džordž skveru.[2] Oktobra 1779, on je počeo da pohađa nastavu u Kraljevskoj gimnaziji u Edinburgu. Tada je već mogao da hoda i istražuje grad i okolnu prirodu. Njegovo čitanje je uključivalo viteške romanse, pesme, istoriju i putopise. Džejes Mičel mu je davao privatne časove iz aritmetike i pisanja i od njega je naučio istoriju Škotske crkve sa naglaskom na Zavetima. Godine 1783, njegovi roditelji su ga, verujući da je premašio svoju snagu, poslali da boravi šest meseci kod tetke Dženi u Kelsu u Škotskim granicama: tamo je pohađao Kelsku gimnaziju, gde je upoznao Džejmsa Balantajna i njegovog brata Džona, koji su kasnije postali njegovi poslovni partneri i štampari.[11]
