Džejms Noks Polk
Džejms Noks Polk (engl. James Knox Polk; Pajnvil, 2. novembar 1795 — Nešvil, 15. jun 1849) bio je jedanaesti predsednik Sjedinjenih Američkih Država od 4. marta 1845. do 4. marta 1849. godine. Rođen je u Pajnvilu u Severnoj Karolini,[1] ali je najveći deo života proveo u Tenesiju za koji se vezuje i najveće deo njegovog političkog angažmana. Kao član Demokratske stranke bio je predsedavajući Predstavničkog doma i guverner Tenesija.

Odlučno je podržavao Endrua Džeksona pa je važio za poslednjeg „jakog“ predsednika pre Američkog građanskog rata. Polk je pre svega zapamćen po uspešno vođenoj spoljnoj politici. Pretio je ratom Britaniji ali se zatim povukao i odlučio na podelu Severozapada sa Britanijom. Poznatiji je po uspešnom vođenju Američko-meksičkog rata. Smanjio je poreze i uspostavio sistem rezervi koji će potrajati do 1913. godine. Povukao se nakon jednog mandata ne tražeći reizbor. Umro je tri meseca nakon završetka predsedničkog mandata.
Polk je prvi predsjednik koji je uživo fotografisan dok je radio u uredu. Uglavnom je poznat po svojoj uspešnoj spoljnoj politici. Zapretio je ratom protiv Velike Britanije zbog njihovog neslaganja oko toga ko ima pravo na zemlju Oregon, a potom je ustuknuo te podelio vlasništvo nad spomenutom regijom s Britanijom. Kada država Meksiko nije priznala američko pripojenje Teksasa, Polk je poveo naciju u uverljivu pobedu tokom Američko-meksičkog rata nakon kojeg su SAD dobile većinu današnjeg jugozapada. Takođe je osigurao sprovođenje Volkerove carine 1846. godine s niskim stopama na čemu su mu posebno bili zahvalni njegovi sunarodnici s Juga, a osnovao je i sastav riznice koja je trajala sve do 1913. godine.
Polk je nadgledao otvaranje vojne akademije u Anapolisu, izgradnju grupe muzeja i istraživačkih centara u SAD poznatih pod nazivom Smitsonijan institucija, početak gradnje Vašingtonovog spomenika kao i izdavanje prvih poštanskih marki u SAD. Obećao je ostati predsednik samo jedan mandat i na kraju nije ni izlazio na reizbore. Umro je od kolere tri meseca nakon završetka mandata.
Istoričari i naučnici Džejmesa Noksa Polka uvek su stavljali na visoko mesto najvećih američkih predsednika zbog njegove sposobnosti ostvarivanja zadanih ciljeva. Polk se ponekad naziva „najmanje poznatim”[2] predsednikom SAD.
Detinjstvo i mladost
urediDžejms Noks Polk, prvi od desetero djece, rođen je 2. novembra 1795. godine u kući na farmi[1] u mestu koje se danas zove Pajnvil (država Severna Karolina) u okrugu Meklenburg, malo izvan Šarlota.[3] Njegov otac, Samjuel Polk, bio je robovlasnik, uspešni farmer i nadzornik škotsko-irskog porekla. Njegova majka, Džejn Polk (rođena Koks) bila je potomak brata škotskog religijskog reformera Džona Noksa. Svojem prvom detetu dala je ime prema svom ocu Džejmsu Koksu.[3] Poput svih ranijih škotsko-irskih doseljenika u planine Severne Karoline, porodice Knoks i Polk bile su prezbiterijanci. I dok je Džejn čitav svoj život ostala odana prezbiterijanka, Samjuel (čiji je otac, Ezekiel Polk, bio deista) odbio je dogmatsko prezbiterijanstvo. Kada su roditelji odveli malog Džejmsa u crkvu radi krštenja, otac Samjuel odbio je da izjavi da je katolik te je svećenik odbio da krsti dete.[3][4] Godine 1803. većina Polkovih rođaka preselila se u područje reke Dak (područje koje je danas poznato kao okrug Mori, središnji Tenesi); porodica Polk tamo se preselila tri godine kasnije.[5] Porodica je bila bogata, a Samjuel Polk postao je okružni sudija.[5]
