Antonija Suzan Bajat

Dama Antonija Suzan Dufi (rođeno ime Drabble), (engl. Dame Antonia Susan Duffy, Šefild, 24. avgust 1936 – London, 16. novembar 2023), profesionalno poznata pod svojim ranijim udatim imenom, A. S. Bajat (Antonija Suzan Bajat),[1] bila je engleski kritičar, romanopisac, pesnik i pisac kratkih priča. Njene knjige su prevedene na više od trideset jezika.[2][3]

Život i rad uredi

Antonija Suzan Drable je rođena u Šefildu, u Engleskoj, 24. avgusta 1936, [4]kao najstarije dete Džona Frederika Drabla KC, kasnije sudije Okružnog suda, i Ketlin Blur, učenice Brauninga. Njene sestre su romanopisac Margaret Drabl i istoričarka umetnosti Helen Langdon. Njen brat Ričard Drable KC je advokat. [5] Otac Drabl je učestvovao u smeštaju jevrejskih izbeglica u Šefild tokom 1930-ih. [6] Majka je bila Šavijanka, a otac kveker. [6] Kao rezultat bombardovanja Šefilda tokom Drugog svetskog rata porodica se preselila u Jork.

Bajat se školovala u dva nezavisna internata, Sheffield High School i The Mount School, kvekerskom internatu u Jorku.

Nakon što je pohađala Univerzitet u Kembridžu, udala se 1959 . i preselila u Duram. Tokom Bajatovog studiranja na univerzitetu počela je da radi na svoja prva dva romana, koje su kasnije objavili Chatto & Windus kao Shadow of a Sun (1964; ponovo štampan 1991. sa prvobitno nameravanim naslovom, The Shadow of the Sun) i The Game (1967). Njen roman The Children's Book (Dečja knjiga) ušao je u uži izbor za Bukerovu nagradu 2009. i osvojio je Memorijalnu nagradu Džejms Tejt Blek 2010. godine. Bajat je imenovana za komandanta Ordena Britanske imperije (CBE) na novogodišnjim počastima 1990. [12] i unapređen je u Dame komandanta Ordena Britanske imperije (DBE), „za zasluge za književnost“, u čast rođendana Elizabete II 1999. [13][9]

Bajat je pominjana kao kandidat za Nobelovu nagradu za književnost. [11]

The Times ju je 2008. uvrstio na svoju listu 50 najvećih britanskih pisaca od 1945. [14]
